College football bowl projections: Welcome to the College Football Playoff, TCU

Welcome to the College Football Playoff, TCU.

The Horned Frogs went from tepidly splashing alongside the CFP’s edge to diving into the deep finish this week. TCU eliminated any doubt of its Playoff contender standing with a hard-fought win towards Texas. In this week’s projections, the Horned Frogs entered the high 4 with Oregon’s exit and leapt previous Tennessee into the No. 3 slots

For the second consecutive week, Georgia stays No. 1, Michigan No. 2 and Tennessee No. 4. Just a few groups circling round the Playoff wading pool like hungry sharks embrace potential Pac-12 champion USC, projected Big Ten runner-up Ohio State and SEC West champion LSU.

Penn State edged projected Pac-12 runner-up Oregon as the remaining New Year’s Six at-large spot in the Cotton Bowl. UCF changed Tulane as the high Group of 5 champion.

Just a few different notes:

  • We took the “liberty” (pun meant) of flipping Memphis from the AAC’s Fenway spot to the hometown Liberty Bowl to face Kansas. That change allowed UConn to take an 85-mile bus experience to Fenway and face outdated Big East rival Syracuse.
  • Should Penn State soar forward of an SEC at-large staff not headed to the Playoff or Sugar Bowl, the Nittany Lions will play in the Orange Bowl. That would give the Big Ten’s ReliaQuest (previously Outback) spot to the ACC.
  • 64 groups are bowl eligible for 82 spots. With two weeks left in the common season, we challenge 83 eligible groups.

Reminders:

  • Most bowls would not have to choose in strict order of convention standings. “Big 12 No. 3″ means third alternative, not third place. The SEC workplace performs matchmaker with its bowls and colleges.
  • Notre Dame can fill one among the ACC’s bowl spots.
  • ESPN Events owns and operates 16 of the 41 FBS bowls, most of them involving the Group of 5 conferences. They have latitude to transfer groups round to create fascinating matchups. One we got here up with: A Birmingham Bowl matchup of Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina.
  • Bowls’ priorities vary from TV viewers to maximizing attendance. A staff like Texas may generate sizable rankings however a motivated fan base like Kansas may swarm to a location in droves and assist enhance ticket gross sales and the native financial system.

All occasions Eastern.
