Matt Shaw’s Historic Showing Leads Terps to 20-6 Victory

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Matt Shaw’s historic offensive performance led an incredible Maryland offensive outburst as the Terps topped the Michigan Wolverines 20-6 on Saturday night for a program-record 40th regular season victory and a 10th series victory this season.

Shaw headlined the night with his career-best three home run, eight RBI effort. His eight RBI tie a school-record previously set by Will Watson on May 12, 2018 against Rutgers. The last time a Terp hit three over the fence came on May 8, 2021 by Justin Vought.

It’s the most runs ever for the Terrapins in a Big Ten game and the most for this team since scoring 26 on March 29 against Towson. The Terps have now scored over double-digit runs in four of seven games in May.

Shaw now has three games with at least two home runs this season and four in his career while his previous career-high was four RBI, which he reached three times in the past. Saturday marks the first multi-dinger effort for Shaw since smashing a pair against Dallas Baptist on March 26. Shaw now has home runs in his last three games and six in his last five games dating back to May 8 against Rutgers.

Down 3-0 at the bottom of the second inning, the Terps immediately recovered with a seven-run effort. Started off by a Bobby Zmarzlak single, the Terps strung together five hits for seven runs and forcing a mid-inning pitching change. Three of the five hits were for extra bases as Shaw capped it off with a three-run bomb.

While the Wolverines scored two of their own, Ian Petrutz drove in two to earn those runs right back. Shaw added to the Terps tally and continued his torrid pace with a home run in his second at-bat. As the rain clouds cleared, the Terps continued the offensive storm with a five-run bottom of the seventh inning. Once again, Shaw punctuated the inning, this time with a grand slam.

The Terps posted five runs again in the eighth inning bookended by a Petrutz double and a Lorusso home run.

Led by Shaw’s eight, four individual Terps had at least three RBI on the night. Eight Terps knocked a hit and nine scored a run. Five individuals had multiple hits on the night and five Terps scored three runs on the night.

Ryan Ramsey tossed five innings of four-hit ball and struck out three Wolverines. Noah Mrotek stepped-up with three innings of scoreless ball featuring a couple of strikeouts. Will Glock came in to finish things in the ninth inning.

Maryland improves to 40-10 overall and 15-5 in the Big Ten. The Terps have won 10 out of 11 three-game series this season including all seven in conference. The Wolverines fall to 25-23 and 10-10 in the conference.
